SHELBY TOWNSHIP — On May 18, Sue and Thom Mathes will host the Team Mathes 5k Run/Walk, presented by C-Net Systems of Shelby Township, to raise funds for the American Brain Tumor Association.

The event begins at the Web Branch Picnic Area C of Stony Creek Metropark, 4300 Main Park Road. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The 1-mile fun run/walk begins at 9 a.m.; the 5k run begins at 9:30 a.m. Visit to register online.

Human and canine participants of all ages are welcome. Volunteers and sponsors are sought, too. Registration is $20 per adult and $10 per child, but more donations are encouraged and appreciated. Terrain for the race is wooded and marked. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers of each age group.

In January 2011, Thom Mathes was diagnosed with three brain tumors, thus the inception of the event. He endured surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. Moved by Thom’s courage, Sue decided to increase brain tumor awareness and fundraise for the ABTA.
